What is HTML?

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is used to create content on website pages. Hypertext Markup Examples include: written text, list and line formatting; many foundations to websites use a separate Hypertext file for their core content and then add a style-sheet to further design the organic look and feel to the respective website.

What is CSS?

CSS (Cascade Styling Sheets) is used for furthering the over-all design and style of the website. It is a common practice to keep your CSS files separate and reference them in your HTML files. The key word to remember for CSS is styling. Examples include: layout, positioning, background colors, font colors, alignment, shadowing and animations. Think of CSS as putting a fresh coat of paint on your HTML.

What is JS?

Javascript a programming language using variables and functions, supported by web browsers/internet clients. The main reason for this, is it allows more robust and complex operations and functions that aren’t possible with HTML and CSS. It allows web developers to design interactive and immersive experiences. Javascript examples include: pop-up boxes, login forms, enhanced or fully customized animations, cohesive integration and cross-browser compatibility.

The Result?

Undoubtedly there is no real winner when it comes to a competition with the aforementioned languages. They are all necessary to create a modern website. In summary, you use (HTML) Hypertext Markup Language for your core foundation for a website. You use CSS to further customize your core –  to be as visually pleasing as possible, and you use Javascript to create complex actions. These are not the only languages used for web development, but the most essential to understand.
